How the Kinect works

I initially thought that the depth sensor was using a method based on time-of-flight.

Instead, the illuminated dotted pattern suggests that the Kinect may be using a method based on parallax (apparent lateral shifting of dots or distance between dots depending on distance) that results from the illumination source and the sensor being apart. The pattern of dots would be an encoding technique to help identify individual dots (like Anoto digital paper) out of the projected “grid”.

The PrimeSense website confirms that the smarts are in the illumination (Light Coding) and post-processing.
